Choose the Hard Conversation

— Nicholas Peters

Every relationship you value will eventually require a conversation you do not want to have. Have it anyway.

My children,

Every relationship worth keeping will eventually require a conversation you do not want to have.

An apology that costs your pride. A truth a friend needs to hear. A boundary that will disappoint someone you love. A concern raised before a small problem becomes a permanent one.

Most people avoid these conversations. They let resentment grow quietly, until one day the relationship is unrecognizable and no one can remember when it broke.

Do not be that person.

Have the hard conversation early. Have it in private. Have it with love. And have it with the willingness to be told you were wrong too.

The short-term discomfort is nothing compared to the long-term damage of the words you never spoke.

With love,

Dad
