    Chapter Two

    The Story of Miriam Peters

    Who is Miriam Peters?

Miriam Peters is a Charlotte, North Carolina interior designer, wife and mother. Her story here brings together family life, resilience and the attention to everyday living that informs her design work.

Her interiors are presented by Emerald & Oak Design. Read about Miriam Peters' design process or explore the principles behind her interiors before continuing with the family story below.

    Our story begins with responsibility.

Every great family story has more than one beginning.

Nicholas's story explains one beginning. Miriam's story explains another: the resilience, conviction and care she brings to our partnership and her work.

    Before she became a mother.
    Before she became my wife.
Before the life we built together ever began.

Miriam was already fighting a battle that would test the limits of the human spirit.

She was only twelve years old.

Most children at that age are worried about school, friends, or what they want to be when they grow up.

But one day, sitting in a doctor's office, Miriam heard words that no child should ever have to hear.

    Bone cancer.

The disease had taken hold in her right knee. Doctors spoke with care and compassion, but the reality of the situation was devastating.

Her chance of survival was less than one percent.

For many families, news like that feels like the end of hope itself.

    But Miriam was never ordinary.

Even as a young girl, there was something remarkable inside her — a determination and strength that refused to accept that her life would end before it had truly begun.

During that time, Miriam became a Make-A-Wish child. When asked what she wished for, she did not ask for something extravagant.

Her wish was simple and joyful.

She wanted to go to New York City.
She wanted to see Cats on Broadway.
And she wanted to meet the cast.

For a moment, the hospital rooms and treatments were replaced with bright lights, music, laughter, and the magic of the theater. It was a reminder that even in the darkest seasons of life, joy can still find its way in.

But the fight waiting for her afterward was long and difficult.

During her treatments, Miriam and her family stayed at the Ronald McDonald House, surrounded by other families fighting battles of their own.

Every hallway carried stories of courage, fear, hope, and heartbreak.

And through it all, Miriam kept fighting.

    Chemotherapy.
    Surgeries.
    Endless hospital visits.

Pain that no child should ever have to endure.

And yet, through strength that can only be described as extraordinary, she kept moving forward.

Against odds that doctors once believed were nearly impossible…

    She survived.

But survival came with a cost.

The treatments that saved her life caused permanent damage to her knee. Much of it had to be reconstructed with metal components that would wear down over time. Multiple surgeries followed throughout her life, and pain would remain something she quietly carried.

But Miriam never allowed those hardships to define her life.

    She chose gratitude.

    She chose faith.

She chose to see her survival not as a burden, but as a gift — a second chance that she would never take for granted.

Years later, our paths crossed, and I met the woman who would become my partner in life.

And from the moment I truly understood who she was, I knew something important.

    Miriam is strong.

Not just strong in the way people casually use that word.

She is strong in the kind of way that life only creates through hardship, perseverance, and faith.

She is also strong-willed — just like me.

That matters to understanding our partnership.

Miriam and I are both strong-willed. We are both determined people. We both have strong opinions, strong convictions, and the kind of personalities that usually insist on leading the way.

Two people like that rarely survive together.

In many relationships, two strong personalities clash until something breaks.

    But Miriam possesses something rare.

She has the strength to lead, but also the wisdom to unite.

She has the courage to stand firm, but also the heart to hold a family together.

She is the quiet force that keeps everything aligned when life becomes difficult.

When Miriam came into our lives, she did not just marry me.

She embraced Kaitlyn with a love that was immediate and unconditional.

She stepped into the role of mother without hesitation, helping transform what had once been a struggling young father and his little girl into something whole — a family.

Later, we were blessed with more children and more chapters in our story.

And there was also a moment in our lives that brought deep sorrow — the loss of our daughter, Brooke.

Miriam carried her with love, and although Brooke's time with us was brief, she will always be part of our family and part of our story.

Miriam faced that moment with the same courage that has defined her entire life.

    With grace.

And with a strength that few people will ever truly understand.

Some people show strength in loud and visible ways.

But the strength Miriam carries is different.

    It is steady.

    It is resilient.

It is the strength of someone who has faced unimaginable trials and still chooses kindness.

    Still chooses gratitude.

    Still chooses love.

Through every challenge life has placed in front of her — cancer, surgeries, pain, and loss — Miriam has never stopped being a source of light for the people around her.

To the world, she may simply be known as Miriam Peters.

But to me, she is far more than that.

    She is my partner.

She is my encouragement when the road feels heavy.

She is the heart of our family.

Her strength runs through our family story and shapes the perspective she brings to design.

She is a mother and a designer.

    A survivor.

    A woman of extraordinary courage.

And one of the strongest human beings I have ever known.

    The Strength Behind the Legacy

    Our story begins with responsibility.

The world often celebrates visible success — businesses, achievements, accomplishments.

But the truth is that the strongest foundations of any family are rarely visible from the outside.

    They are built quietly.

    Through character.

Through the courage of the people who stand beside us during life's hardest moments.

    Miriam is that foundation.

She is the woman who survived a battle that doctors once believed she could not win.

She is the woman who has endured pain most people will never understand and still wakes up every day grateful for the life she was given.

Her care for our family is steady and deeply felt.

And she helped shape the family and shared life described here.

Everything we have built — every opportunity, every success, every dream that became reality — stands on a foundation much deeper than hard work.

    It stands on love.

    It stands on faith.

And it stands on the strength of Miriam.

Because behind every lasting legacy, there is often someone whose courage made it possible.

    For our family…

    That person is Miriam.

That partnership is fundamental to our story.

Families like ours do not stay strong because of one person.

They stay strong because someone has the wisdom, patience, and strength to keep everyone united.

    Miriam is that person.

She is the glue that holds us together.

She is the quiet strength that steadies this family when the world becomes uncertain.

As her husband and partner, I value the strength and perspective Miriam brings to the life we have built.

    Miriam, thank you.

    Thank you for your strength.

Thank you for the love you have poured into this family.

And thank you for being the woman who helped turn our story into something far greater than I could have ever built alone.

Miriam is not simply part of our story.

She is one of the reasons it exists.
